Why would you want to buy something so small to be able to play games which we played back in the 80’s. Well, in this article we will show you why the retro Nintendo mini classic console is a good console which is small but unique.

The Design

nintendo classic mini console review

The design of the NES they have kept the same, with the console and the joypads. The console still looks the same as the original design, the only difference is it does not take cartridges.

Remember those cartridges they were annoying sometimes wasn’t they, did you ever have to blow in them in order for them to work. Well, now the games run on the internal memory of the NES. Also, instead of AV cables with pins or ariel wires, it uses HDMI connectors.

A lot has changed in technology since 1983 from the release of the original console, but they were the good old days. So apart from the console not having a cartridge slot to the changes also in ariel connectors to HDMI.

One of the biggest changes is in the weight of the console, why the weight? Well, that may be due to its size, in fact, this “little” beauty fits in the palm of your hand. The joypads remain the same with the d-pad for directional use with the select and start button in the middle. Also, the 2 red buttons A & B, the only thing we didn’t like about the joypad controllers is the length of the cable.

The good thing about this unique little NES device is, you can use them with Wii Classic controllers. So if you want to use another controller or maybe you prefer Wii Controllers.

Otherwise, if you are using the NES controller then you will have to sit nearer to the television or console. Not sure about everyone else but I prefer to relax further away not too far but certainly not too close either.

Nintendo Classic Mini Console Performance

The design is great and gives the old feeling of the original, so what is the overall performance? Firstly, the game performance is excellent as soon as you switch on the NES mini console you are presented with the Game menu. The only downside is there are only 30 games on this Nintendo classic mini console. The 30 Games are as follows:

  • Balloon Fight
  • Bubble Bobble
  • Castlevania
  • Castlevania II: Simon’s Quest
  • Donkey Kong
  • Donkey Kong Jr.
  • Double Dragon II: The Revenge
  • Dr. Mario
  • Excitebike
  • Final Fantasy
  • Galaga
  • Ghosts N Goblins
  • Gradius
  • Ice Climber
  • Kid Icarus
  • Kirby’s Adventure
  • Mario Bros.
  • Mega Man 2
  • Metroid
  • Ninja Gaiden
  • Pac-Man
  • Punch-Out! Featuring Mr. Dream
  • StarTropics
  • Super C
  • Super Mario Bros.
  • Super Mario Bros. 2
  • Super Mario Bros. 3
  • Tecmo Bowl
  • The Legend of Zelda
  • Zelda II: The Adventure of Link

There are so many good classics on this list which are built-in on this NES mini console. I do think Bionic commando should have been on the list and Duck hunt, well you would need the light gun. At least some of the top classics are on the list I use to love playing Super Mario Bros games on the NES.

I do think and I am sure the rest of you feel the same that the cartridge door should have been able to open and use our old games. It would have also been great if we as the players were allowed to use some form of external storage and download games. This doesn’t seem to be the case with this console, it is only offline only.

An excellent exception for this is also they have a save state mode on this fascinating console. This is awesome for those who are getting stressed out for example; playing Mario and you’re on your last life. You may jump but not quite far enough and die, so this save function comes in handy.

When you are playing a game mid-way all you have to do is simply just press the reset button which is on the console. When you have done this it will then ask you if you want to save your progress which by pressing down on the essential D-pad you can do this. Also to note that with each game you decide to play as 4 save slots for each game, so you could save on slot 1 and 2. Maybe you decide you want to go back to the first save then you can do this.

Pros

We kind of liked the overall look and feel of what the Nintendo mini classic console as to offer. Looks like the original and can easily be put away when not in use. Better still it as some of the top classic games which you can play from Super Mario Bros to Donkey Kong and Mega Man. Have endless fun with the top classic games which the NES min has to offer.

The controller has a great feel to it and resembles the original 1983’s Nintendo entertainment system controller. Not too big, nor too small but just the right size and comfortable with using. Perhaps the best feature we have enjoyed using while playing some of the games on this device was the save functionality.

This enables the player to save their game state which allows them to play from the same state to which the left off at. Which is well considered to the original console when we would get so far probably near to the end of the entire game. You had to turn the console off and then when you return you would have to start from the beginning.

Cons

The thing I didn’t like much is when you want to save the state of your game progression you have to press a button on the console. Yes, I know it would be a lot easier being able to use the controller to save your game. I do feel this is pointless in having the put your controller down and leaning over to the console to press reset. You press the reset button it will then ask you if you want to save your progression. Wouldn’t it be a lot simpler to press start on the controller and bring up a menu to save?

Another thing which is a dislike is the shortage of cable, it is just too short. Which if like me are a couch gamer then be ready too sit on the floor or closer to the console? The games list is good but some more extra classics are missing from the list. It would have been good if they actually did a little research first to see what the typical retro gaming would like or a survey. Nintendo classic mini console as more positive rather than negative.

Conclusion

When we tried this at first we didn’t think it would be so good or replica as much as the original. But, it proved us wrong our team loved playing this we did kind of chuckle when taking it out the box as to the size. But it is true what they say about the size doesn’t count, and with the Nintendo Classic Mini console, this is true. It may be small but it still kicks out a great performance. Apart from not being able to play your own cartridge games like you can with the SupaBoy and the SEGA mini-series. In fairness, you can still have fun with the classic titles on this mini console.
